Carol Pettie
Mcelvy
January 27, 2023
Carol Pettie McElvy of West Point, passed away on Friday January 27, 2023 at Bethany House in Auburn, AL.
Carol attended Huntington College where she met the Love of her Life, Joe Dan McElvy. She was blessed to have him by her side for 56 years preceding her in death in 2010. She slept with his shirt until the day she died. We are comforted to know they are together again.
Carol was raised in McWilliams, AL, daughter of Virgie Mae and Douglas Pettie always known to us as Nana and Papa.
Carol was strong, opinionated and the most loving, caring, compassionate friend and Mom anyone could be blessed with. She worried and prayed for everyone. Her "Bless-um Heart" could always make any bad day better. She was a wonderful Mom and you always felt her love. She had the best hugs, although if she had her Velcros in it could be a little painful. She leaves behind but will always be watching over her three children who will cherish their many memories, Dutch (Thea) McElvy, Cissy (Don) Bayles, and Joe (Whitney) McElvy.
Carol or Shug as the Grands and Greats called her, lived for time with her family. Her greeting cards always ended with how very much she loved you and how very proud she was of you. Counting your "Very"s became a family competition to see who received the most. She loved family gatherings, the more the better. Thursday Family night dinners out were always a treat for her. Shug adored spending time with her six grandchildren: Jason(Chelsey) McElvy, Joseph (Tracy) McElvy, DJ/Doug (Katie) McElvy, Erin (Jacob) Cotney, Davis Bayles, Meg (Dustin) Hudmon, and Oh My how those eight Great Grands put a smile on her face: Macy, Allison, Jacks, Ella Kate, Ayda Jane, Oaklynn, Bradley and Ryan. Shug will always hold a special place in their hearts and I know she will continue to watch over them.
Carol's faith was always strong and was until the very end. She was a member of the West Point First United Methodist Church. She requested communion two days prior to her death. Thank you Pastor Erik Mays for making the trip to Bethany House. She always loved volunteering at the Soup Kitchen and was involved with the Hawks Library, and the Hospital Auxiliary.
Visitation will be held at the West Point United Methodist Church Zachry Center on Wednesday, February 1st, at 10 am, with services following at 11.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the West Point United Methodist Church soup kitchen or a charity of your choosing.
