Bluffton Funeral Services respectfully announces the passing of Miss Julia Belle Kirby Mehaffey of Lanett who died peacefully at her home Saturday May 13th, 2017.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time at Lanett United Methodist Church with the Reverend Rusty Williams officiating.
A private family burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett, Alabama.
The family will receive friends at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time until the funeral hour at the church.
Miss Julia is survived by her son, David Edward Mehaffey and wife Brooke, of Muscatine, Iowa, and daughter Judith Catherine Landers of Dalton, Georgia. Three grandchildren also survive her, McClain John Mehaffey and Luke Franklin Mehaffey of Muscatine, and Julia Catherine Landers of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Miss Julia is also survived by a brother, Jack Kirby, of Charleston, South Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
Miss Julia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Jesse Franklin (Jack) Mehaffey, son Jesse Franklin Mehaffey, Jr., seven siblings, and her parents.
Miss Julia was born Monday, July 18, 1927 in Roanoke, Alabama to the late William Causey Kirby and Mittis Lou Arnold Kirby. She was raised in Langdale, Alabama and loved telling about her years there. She had fond memories of her church family at Langdale Methodist Church.
Miss Julia was a graduate of Valley High School and Massey Business College in Montgomery where she received a secretarial science degree. She retired from West Point Pepperell's Corporate Office, having been a corporate secretary for forty three years.
She loved the Lord and was an active member of Lanett United Methodist Church where she had served in numerous capacities, including Administrative Board, Worship Committee, Finance Committee, choir, and was instrumental in the beginning of the church's Hand Bell Choir. Miss Julia loved working with children and her second career at Springwood's Childhood Development center brought her years of joy.
Miss Julia was an avid reader, enjoyed music, traveling, cooking, gardening, and birding.
The family requests that Miss Julia be honored either with flowers or memorial gifts to Lanett First United Methodist Church.
