Marion Janet Humphrey Cook, age 95, formerly of Lanett, passed away peacefully on September 7th 2026, with her family by her side. She was born on September 2, 1931 in LaGrange, Georgia as the only child of William Truitt Humphrey and Annie Dunlap Humphrey. She was a 1949 graduate of LaGrange High School and soon thereafter met her husband of 42 years, William (Bill) Cook, at a church event. The couple married on April 9, 1950 and went on to have four children. Bill’s job and their journeys together took them to Encino, California, Huntsville, Alabama and a brief time in Cheyenne, Wyoming, before deciding to move home to be closer to family. In 1963, they purchased what became Cook Oil Company, Inc. and ran it successfully for 33 years.

Janet was an active member of the West Point Pilot Club and served as its Georgia Lieutenant Governor for two terms. It was through this wonderful group of ladies that she enjoyed serving her community and developing many lifelong friendships.

She was a beloved member of the First Baptist Church of Lanett where she served for several decades coordinating meals for bereaved families. This was truly a ministry of love for Janet and she took great pride in bringing some comfort to others during their most difficult moments. Her family often mused that you never wanted to see Janet at your door with a casserole, and yet, she took it all in stride and served until she moved to Norcross, Georgia in 2021.

Janet was a true southern lady and she and Bill delighted in opening their home to family and friends. She was a gracious hostess and a wonderful cook. She often planned large parties and family gatherings and especially enjoyed the holidays. Her home was always beautifully decorated and those who entered felt welcomed and loved.

Janet enjoyed traveling, especially Sunday drives. She loved making gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child and sharing smiles and compliments to everyone she met especially in the Lanett Kroger. She loved fresh flowers and believed they brightened a home and a heart. Janet took great pride in looking her best, especially enjoying her regular visits to Lynn Davis, who kept her hair the perfect style and shade of honey brown for over 40 years.

Perhaps most importantly, Janet was a child of God. She read her bible daily and sang the traditional hymns to her children and grandchildren. She encouraged the gift of music in her home and never missed an opportunity to tell you how important it was to love Jesus. She loved the Lord and, even in her dementia, bore witness to the deep love of Christ.

The last three years of Janet’s life brought her many challenges. She faced them with grace through the amazing care of her devoted caregivers, Maria Fotougar and Safia Pitts. Maria cared for her daily with the abiding love of a daughter who had walked through this journey before and kept smiling and laughing each day. Safia’s compassion and deep love brought tremendous comfort.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sons, William Henry Cook, Jr. (Bill, Jr.) and Jonathan Eric Cook (Jon). Also, by her great grandson, Timothy Chandler Cook and her step-grandson, Dr. Mark Oliver. Janet is survived by her daughters, Janet Oliver (Bill) of Montgomery, Texas and Michelle Crofton (Peter) of Norcross, Georgia and her daughter-in-law, Jan Lindsey Cook of Chelsea, Alabama. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Anna, Katie, Maddie and Gracie Crofton, Elizabeth and Eric Cook and Meredith McNeill (Tracy). Also missing her are her great-grandsons, John Douglas and Walker and her great-great-grandson, Pierceton and his mother, Melissa Hyde. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and we know she will miss her weekly letters from her nephew, Monroe Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 8th, at the First Baptist Church of Lanett, followed by interment at Harmony Gardens (formerly Resthaven Cemetery). The family will welcome friends and family at a visitation on Monday, the 7th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. EST at Valley-Point Funeral Home in Lanett.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Lanett or directly to Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child.
