Mr. Robert Joseph Powers, Jr. , 69, of West Point, Georgia, died Thursday, October 5, 2017, at EAMC Lanier Hospital in Valley. He had been in declining health for several years.
Visitation will be held at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett on Friday, October 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm ET. A graveside service will be held at the Fairfax Cemetery on Saturday at 11:00 am ET. Rev. Bobby Elliott officiating.
Bob was a native of Columbus, Georgia, son of Robert, Sr., and Bernice Spear Powers. A graduate of Jordan High School, he attended Auburn University on a music scholarship and was a member of the AU Marching Band. He enlisted in the U.S. Military and served with honor in the Brown Water Navy in Vietnam from 1969-1971. Bob was a gifted writer and song crafter, and worked in regional advertising for many years, including ten years at the Valley Times-News. He was a member of Spring Road Christian Church, where he taught Sunday school and operated the soundboard.
His survivors include his wife, Malinda Crowder Powers, sons Charlie of West Point ., Robert III (Bo) of Pittsburgh PA. and John Floyd Powers of Nashville Tn.; sisters Betsy (Buck) Zachry of Lake Harding and Leslie (Ken) Mendenhall of Columbus GA; brother Chuck Powers of Stockbridge, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
